Introduction: Phượt

Hello Internet! I’m Jay, the Worldly Nerd, and I’m here to take you on a journey. I’m a boring suburban-raised American nerd who decided to escape the boring suburban American lifestyle. So I took my nerdliness abroad!

Stopping to take in the sights in the Vietnamese highlands

A few years ago, I decided my job wasn’t for me, so I took the advice of a friend and went on the European backpacking trip I should have done at a younger age. Upon returning home, I found I couldn’t stand the thought of returning to a desk, so I sold my boring suburban house, and packed up again. This time I targeted Australia and Asia. And wouldn’t you know it, I decided to stay! I’ve lived and worked two years in Vietnam, a place I never in my earlier life expected to even visit, much less call home. I’ve learned a lot in that time. I’ve adapted to a new culture, I’ve fallen in love, and I’ve learned to see the world through fresh eyes.

But it seems I’ve nevertheless gotten restless. Even the different world and culture that is Vietnam wasn’t enough to satisfy my nerdy curiosity for long, so now, with the enthusiastic companionship of my lovely girlfriend, Trang, it’s off for more adventure!

The Vietnamese have a word I find intriguing: phượt. It translates, roughly, as “traveling great distances by motorbike for enjoyment.”

Balancing these baskets isn’t as easy as the little old ladies make it look!

We’re setting off on our phượt. We are traveling light, simple, and cheap, carrying only what fits on our little motorbike. We aim to see not only the famous tourist sights, but also the simple, the mundane, and particularly, the authentic. Every place has a history. Every human a story. We can never uncover them all, but we mean to find what we can. We’ll take our nerdiness to the science, culture, history, and beauty of the world, and we hope to bring you other nerds of the world along for the ride!

We’re writing up our experiences here on this blog, posting videos on Youtube, documenting photos on Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter, and interacting with our fellow nerds from around the globe. I hope you’ll join us on our grand phượt of discovery!
