Miền Đồng Thảo is a surprising garden shop tucked away near the train tracks that cross Nguyễn Trọng Tuyển street. It’s owned by the same folks who run the palatial Du Miên Garden in Gò Vẩp district. Miền Đồng Thảo, which wraps itself around a series of fountains, is not as immense, but still offers numerous seating arrangements on multiple terraces. Most of the shop is outdoors, but there’s a reasonably sized indoor room too.
From Nguyễn Trọng Tuyển street all you’ll see is the parking structure. You cave to walk around the corner, into the railroad’s alley to find the actual entrance. Most of the walls are a cobblestone style, with copious vines hanging over the central structure and various trees providing you some natural shade. They also pipe mist out into the air to keep you cool. It’s not the type of place you’d expect to find along the railroad tracks.
The menu is immense, offering most types of coffee that you could imagine, tea, cocoa, soda, smoothies, yogurt, cocktails, and more types of juice than I’ve seen in a long time. You’ll also find a few pages worth of meal and ice cream options. A plain black coffee costs 37,000đ, a bit more than at the shop’s Gò Vẩp cousin. It is brewed strong, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the flavor. I suspect it’s cut with something other than pure coffee, so it’s not as aromatic as I’d prefer.
Verdict: Like other garden cafés, Miền Đồng Thảo is best suited for a date with someone special or an afternoon break with a few friends. The shop’s beautiful, but the coffee’s flavor doesn’t quite match the décor…or the price.
