Nguyễn Café is a pleasant little place on the corner of Nguyễn Đình Chiểu and Trần Quốc Thảo streets. It’s got more window space than most Vietnamese shops, and inside small tables are packed in about as tight as the narrow shop allows. At lunchtime you’ll find them full of businessmen in loud conversation. Outside the busy hours, you can see a lot of tourists there as well, probably eager for some air conditioning after walking about as far from the city center as they usually get. Decoration is minimal, but elegant, and the music is quiet. Added bonus if you ride a motorbike: there’s lots of parking space, so no need to go down the street.
My reviews of late seemed to have turned up a number of shops that also serve food, which may be harming my credibility – I swear it’s not common! In any case, you can indeed get meals here. Also available are a full host of alcoholic coffees, Western coffees, juices, smoothies, teas, etc. The menu is quite wide-ranging in its drink options. It is more pricy than average (35,000 đ for an iced coffee), however, and I would call the flavor good-but-not-great.
Also a random extra observation: the men and women signs between the restroom doors are very small and subtle. Maybe the Vietnamese are sharper-eyed than I.
Verdict: Nguyễn Café is worth stopping in on once in a while, but I’m not likely to make it a regular haunt.
